Wolfang Sketch

This is a sketch of Blizzard Wolfang from Mega Man X6. X6 is a shockingly bad game, but Wolfang is nonetheless a neat character that I really like. You can read the MMKB wiki entry I linked for his full character history, but the gist it is that he worked for an investigation unit of the Maverick Hunters, specializing in arctic terrain. He was betrayed by his superiors and discreetly killed, before being revived by the game's main villain. He therefore conducts research for the villain out of a sense of owing a debt for his life. When he fights X or Zero, he expresses no bitterness, but states that their fight must occur. When he dies, he simply states, "Farewell."

His design incorporates large slabs of ice employed as claws and supplemental armor. In battle, he switches freely between a bipedal stance and a quadrupedal sprint.

My sketch, then, is based on the interpretation I made of him for the Mega Man alternate universe project I was involved in. Other than the obvious aspect of toning down the somewhat ridiculous limb proportions that Animaloids tend to get in the X series, I simplified some aspects of his design and corrected what I felt like were absurd details. He has this very large chin spike, and I felt it looked silly and would be quite hazardous to allies on base outside of combat. Thus, I wrote that it was removable, and indeed, you can see that here, his chin is normal-sized but has slots for attaching the spike. Additionally, he has a strange whisker-armor thing going on that seems to be made of ice, which I always thought looked a little too much like a mustache and also like it wasn't really protecting much. So I adapted it into more of a deliberately shaped face-plate that covers his snout and upper jaw. I altered his head shape to be more clearly based on wolf head anatomy, referencing an actual 3d scan of a wolf's skull.

In the setting, we tried to tie a lot of organizations and events to real world things. Relevantly, the UN was depicted as a more successful organization in terms of uniting the world, and the Maverick Hunters were explicitly an arm of its military. If you're raising your eyebrow, don't worry- the fact that it's the blue helmets was accounted for and rolled into the inherent tragedy of our version of the X series. This is why Wolfang here has "UN" text along his hip- our story took place long before any interpretation of the events of X6, when he was still with the Hunters. Those familiar with the series will note, this is also why he lacks a forehead gem. His history in my version of things is that he was pressed into service along with an entire early generation of Reploids to fight an invading alien threat. Therefore, his role here isn't an arctic terrain specialist, but a CQC specialist with experimental equipment that allows him to use water stores to generate somewhat more fragile but easily replaceable claws and plates of extra armor. Because this sketch depicts him in a casual setting, a lot of his ice plating is missing, but I do have a concept for altered designs for his pauldrons and whatnot. I may draw him in an action pose at some point with them.

One detail of his character that I'm quite proud of myself for is that he took up etching patterns into his ice implements to pass the time. It's a little difficult to see in this sketch, but it is present, primarily on his finger claws and face plate. It allowed me to mess with a somewhat softer side to him, having him take care to meticulously draw hearts and floral prints on himself to offset being a towering wolf man.

RIP to you, Blizzard Wolfang. You deserved a better game.
